ABS is nowadays perceived as a mandatory component of any car’s equipment. Its presence prevents wheel-locking during sudden braking, which has a beneficial effect on the degree of control of the vehicle during such a manoeuvre. The operation of the ABS system often makes the difference between retaining steering control, or at least significantly mitigating its reduction, and complete loss of control of the car when the wheels are locked. In the first instance, however, the ABS functionality helps to reduce braking distances on an ongoing basis in everyday driving, with results up to fifty per cent of the original braking distance.
ABS pump controller – a critical system component
In order for the ABS system to respond adequately to a manoeuvre and reduce loss of control, it must base its operation on gathered information about the vehicle’s current behaviour. It is the ABS controller that is responsible for both obtaining and processing this information into a specific way of controlling the hydraulic distributors. The ABS controller is a relatively large integrated circuit; in essence, it is a computer intended for specific operations. It is connected to the main on-board computer of the car in order to analyse the information and send commands which control the operation of the ABS system.
The ABS controller is the brain of the system
Due to the nature and importance of the function performed by the ABS controller, when it fails, the entire system is rendered inoperable.
