What is a catalyst and why is it used? The catalytic converter is one of the many parts that make up the entire exhaust system, it is installed in almost every modern car, and its primary task will be to reduce and emit harmful exhaust gases. It is a kind of standard when it comes to our cars, although sometimes we also decide to install it in older ones, all due to the top-down regulations on exhaust emissions.

Thanks to its operation, like an effective filter, the poisonous exhaust gases are transferred directly from the engine to the exhaust system, where the filtration process continues. This allows not only to effectively neutralize harmful exhaust gases, but also to prevent them from reaching the atmosphere, so it is actually supposed to take care of clean air.

When can we be sure that the catalyst has been damaged?

Catalysts, like all other exhaust system systems, can not only break, but also be damaged, although they are referred to as very durable parts. Unfortunately, a badly working engine has a large impact on their incorrect operation, especially the one with a broken lambda probe, which is designed to analyze the exhaust gas level and support the functioning of the catalyst, often problems also appear in cars with an LPG installation. This usually results in a specific ringing, in new cars the indicator light on the dashboard will light up. Of course, when we notice such signals, we should go to the car repair shop, where two options will be considered, namely cleaning the catalyst or its replacement. Most drivers decide on the second solution, although a bit more expensive, it means that after the catalyst is damaged, its replacement has a positive effect on its operation. Therefore, it is worth remembering about an efficient catalytic converter, and at the same time its installation, if our older car did not have it so far and all cars are obliged to reduce pollutant emissions in this way.

A catalyst is an essential component found in the exhaust system of most modern cars. Installed in the catalytic converter, its primary function is to reduce and emit harmful exhaust gases. The catalytic converter has become a standard feature in vehicles due to strict regulations on exhaust emissions, and it is sometimes even retrofitted to older vehicles to comply with these regulations.

Operating as an efficient filter, the catalytic converter intercepts poisonous exhaust gases as they travel from the engine to the exhaust system. Within the catalytic converter, a filtration process takes place, effectively neutralizing harmful emissions and preventing them from being released into the atmosphere. In this way, the catalyst plays a crucial role in ensuring cleaner air and reducing environmental pollution.

Although catalysts are known for their durability, they can still become damaged or malfunction. A poorly functioning engine, particularly one with a faulty lambda probe (which analyzes exhaust gas levels and supports the catalyst's operation), can negatively impact the catalyst's performance. Additionally, cars equipped with LPG installations may also experience issues. Common signs of catalyst damage include a distinct rattling noise or the illumination of the dashboard indicator light in newer vehicles. When such signals are noticed, it is advisable to visit an auto repair shop. Two options will be considered: cleaning the catalyst or replacing it. Most drivers opt for the latter solution, as although more expensive, it ensures optimal functioning after the damaged catalyst is replaced.

It is important to prioritize an efficient catalytic converter and, if necessary, its installation, especially in older vehicles that do not have one. All vehicles are obligated to reduce pollutant emissions, and the presence of a catalytic converter is crucial in achieving this goal. By ensuring the proper functioning of the catalyst, we contribute to minimizing environmental pollution and promoting cleaner air for everyone.
