The cars’ braking system includes an ABS pump, which also operates the ESP. There is also an ABS controller in the system, which reacts to changes in the speed and to the pressing of the brake pedal. The controller manages the pressure produced by the master cylinder; the pressure increases when the brake pedal is pressed. The modulator distributes it to the individual wheels so that the car reduces the speed.
Symptoms of defective ABS pump controller
The ABS system prevents the wheels from locking up so that you can avoid an obstacle while braking. The controller monitors the car’s operation by means of a number of different sensors; its failure can lead to serious problems with the braking system. Many of these can be difficult to detect; the problem will not always be indicated by the ABS warning light, sometimes the lamp may simply come on at higher speeds. Another symptom will be that the fault only occurs when the system is heated. In many cases the fault may indicate sensor failure, but replacing the sensors does not rectify the fault.
The ABS pump controller is now a complex electronic device; there are some electronic components can fail, e.g. the solder joints or the chipset on the circuit board. There can also occur various mechanical faults. If you notice any symptoms of a malfunctioning brake system, you should visit a mechanic. Removing the fault will not always be an easy task, often requiring specialist knowledge and the right equipment.
The repair costs can be quite high, and it is often a better idea to buy a new controller, but a new module can be quite a big expense. A much better idea will be to buy a remanufactured controller that is original and worked previously in another car. Choosing a remanufactured model is a better option than buying a non-original controller, or one that comes from a different vehicle model. A lot of ABS pumps and controllers can be purchased at ABS pump controller remanufacturing – is it worth it. There are ABS components available for Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Peugeot, Chrysler, Citroen and many others.
