Volkswagen ECU – TDI, TSI, EDC17 & MED17 Engine Control Units

Volkswagen ECU – engine control units by VW OEM, Bosch and ECU family

Volkswagen engine control units are best identified by the complete OEM and electronics manufacturer numbers printed on the original ECU label. Typical VW references include number families such as 03L..., 03C..., 04E..., 06J..., 038... and 036..., often combined with Bosch numbers such as 0281... or 0261S... and system designations including EDC17, MED17, EDC15 or MED9.

The Auto24Parts range covers Volkswagen petrol and diesel engine computers for models such as Golf, Passat, Polo, Caddy, Touareg and Crafter. Because similar-looking ECUs can contain different hardware, software, calibration and immobiliser data, the complete part number should always be compared before purchase. Depending on the exact module, locked, ready-for-programming or other preparation variants may be available. See our ECU preparation options.

If you are unsure which VW ECU matches your vehicle, send Auto24Parts a clear photo of the complete original ECU label together with the vehicle model, year and engine version, or browse the complete engine control unit catalogue.

Volkswagen engine control units – ECU selection by VW and manufacturer part number

A Volkswagen engine control unit (ECU), also known as an ECM or engine computer, manages engine operation and exchanges information with other electronic systems in the vehicle. Depending on the engine and ECU generation, the module can control fuel injection, ignition, fuel pressure, turbocharger operation, electronic throttle control and selected emissions-related systems.

For replacement purposes, however, the most important issue is identifying the exact Volkswagen ECU installed in the vehicle. VW has used many different engine-management generations across petrol TSI, FSI and naturally aspirated engines as well as TDI and SDI diesel engines. Modules with almost identical housings and connectors can therefore carry completely different hardware, software or vehicle-specific security data.

Volkswagen ECU part numbers – 03L, 03C, 04E, 06J, 038 and other families

Volkswagen engine computers often carry characteristic VAG OEM references. Common number families include:

  • 03L... – frequently found on various diesel engine control units,
  • 038... – common on many earlier TDI and SDI applications,
  • 03C... – found on several petrol ECU generations,
  • 06J... – used on selected petrol engine control modules,
  • 04E... – found on newer petrol applications,
  • 036... – present on several earlier petrol engine systems,
  • 7P0... – found on selected Touareg applications.

The prefix is useful when identifying the general part-number family, but the complete Volkswagen reference must always be compared. A difference of only one or two letters at the end of the number can identify another ECU version.

Volkswagen OEM number and Bosch number should be checked together

Many Volkswagen ECUs carry both a VW OEM reference and a separate Bosch manufacturer number. Examples include:

  • 03L906018FM / Bosch 0281017157 / EDC17C46,
  • 06J906026FK / Bosch 0261S06066 / MED17.5,
  • 7P0907401 / Bosch 0281016594 / EDC17CP44,
  • 03L906022JE / Bosch 0281016538 / EDC17CP20,
  • 03C906027Q / Bosch 0261S04620 / MED17.5.5,
  • 03C907309J / Bosch 0261S06775 / MED17.5.5.

Searching by both the VW number and Bosch reference usually gives a much more precise result than searching only for “Volkswagen ECU”.

Volkswagen EDC17C46 – 0281017157 / 03L906018FM

One current diesel control unit is the Volkswagen ECU Bosch 0281017157 / 03L906018FM / EDC17C46.

The product is listed for selected Volkswagen TDI applications and carries three important identifiers: Bosch number 0281017157, VW reference 03L906018FM and ECU family EDC17C46.

The Bosch number may also be written as 0 281 017 157. Both formats are useful when searching workshop documentation or comparing the label of the original ECU.

Volkswagen MED17.5 – 0261S06066 / 06J906026FK

A petrol example is the Volkswagen ECU 0261S06066 / 06J906026FK / MED17.5.

The module carries Volkswagen number 06J906026FK, Bosch reference 0261S06066 and the system designation MED17.5.

This demonstrates why petrol engine description alone is not sufficient. Several different MED17 units may have similar housings but different VW and Bosch references.

Volkswagen MED17.5.5 – 0261S04620 / 03C906027Q

Another petrol ECU is the Volkswagen Bosch 0261S04620 / 03C906027Q / MED17.5.5 engine control unit.

MED17.5.5 identifies the ECU family, but it is not a complete compatibility reference. Other MED17.5.5 modules can have different VW OEM and Bosch numbers.

Volkswagen MED17.5.5 – 0261S06775 / 03C907309J

The range also includes the Volkswagen ECU 0261S06775 / 03C907309J / MED17.5.5.

This example is important because both this module and 0261S04620 belong to the MED17.5.5 family, yet their Bosch and Volkswagen numbers are different. Sharing the same ECU family does not make the modules automatically interchangeable.

Volkswagen Touareg – 0281016594 / 7P0907401 / EDC17CP44

For selected Touareg diesel applications, Auto24Parts offers the Volkswagen Touareg ECU 0281016594 / 7P0907401 / EDC17CP44.

The identification combines Bosch reference 0281016594, Volkswagen number 7P0907401 and the EDC17CP44 system designation.

A general search such as “Touareg diesel ECU” should therefore only be treated as an initial search. The final replacement should be selected using the numbers from the original module.

Volkswagen Crafter – 0281032054 / 03L906021N / EDC17C64

Commercial Volkswagen applications are also represented in the catalogue. One current example is the Volkswagen Crafter ECU 0281032054 / 03L906021N / EDC17C64-2.39.

The unit is identified by Bosch number 0281032054, Volkswagen reference 03L906021N and EDC17C64 system information.

Because Crafter vehicles were produced with multiple engine and emissions configurations, the description “VW Crafter ECU” alone is not sufficient for compatibility confirmation.

Volkswagen Polo 1.6 TDI – 5WP42856AA / 03L906023EP

Not every Volkswagen engine computer uses a Bosch number. The Volkswagen Polo 1.6 TDI ECU 5WP42856AA / 03L906023EP / 03L906023D uses a different electronics manufacturer numbering format.

This module is a good example of why it is useful to check every number on the original label rather than expecting all Volkswagen ECUs to carry a Bosch 0281... reference.

Volkswagen Golf – 0281010650 / 038906012FA

Older TDI generations are also well represented. One example is the Volkswagen Golf ECU Bosch 0281010650 / 038906012FA.

The 038... Volkswagen number family appears frequently on earlier VW diesel electronics, including different Golf, Bora and related applications.

Different 038... numbers must still be treated individually because the final letters and manufacturer references can identify another engine, software or hardware version.

Volkswagen Golf and Passat – 0261200491 / 021906258CB

For older petrol applications, the catalogue includes the Volkswagen Golf / Passat ECU Bosch 0261200491 / 021906258CB.

This illustrates the wide time range covered by the Volkswagen category. Older Bosch 026120... systems appear alongside later MED17 and EDC17 generations.

Volkswagen MED9.1 – 0261S02679 / 03H906032EP

Another petrol engine-management family represented in the catalogue is MED9.1. One example is the Volkswagen ECU Bosch 0261S02679 / 03H906032EP / MED9.1.

MED9.1 and MED17 are different ECU generations. The family designation, complete Volkswagen reference and Bosch number should all be considered when identifying a replacement module.

EDC15, EDC17 and other Volkswagen TDI engine control units

Volkswagen diesel applications span several generations of Bosch engine management. Older vehicles commonly use ECU families such as EDC15, while later TDI engines can use EDC17C46, EDC17CP20, EDC17CP44, EDC17C64 and other variants.

Examples available in the wider Volkswagen range include:

  • 0281010302 / 038906019CJ – EDC15P+ application,
  • 0281010650 / 038906012FA,
  • 0281017157 / 03L906018FM / EDC17C46,
  • 0281016538 / 03L906022JE / EDC17CP20,
  • 0281016594 / 7P0907401 / EDC17CP44,
  • 0281032054 / 03L906021N / EDC17C64.

The term “Volkswagen TDI ECU” therefore covers many different generations and should always be narrowed using the exact part number.

MED17, MED9 and older Volkswagen petrol ECUs

Volkswagen petrol engine-management systems are equally varied. The catalogue contains older Bosch petrol modules, MED9 units and several MED17 versions.

Examples include:

  • 0261200491 / 021906258CB,
  • 0261S02679 / 03H906032EP / MED9.1,
  • 0261S06066 / 06J906026FK / MED17.5,
  • 0261S04620 / 03C906027Q / MED17.5.5,
  • 0261S06775 / 03C907309J / MED17.5.5.

For this reason, descriptions such as “VW TSI ECU” or “Volkswagen petrol ECU” are useful for initial navigation but are not sufficient for final compatibility confirmation.

Volkswagen Golf ECU – many engines, many control-unit numbers

Golf is one of the largest Volkswagen ECU application groups in the catalogue. Different generations include petrol, TDI and SDI engines using Bosch, Siemens, Magneti Marelli and other engine-management systems.

Examples found in the Volkswagen range include:

  • 0281010650 / 038906012FA – Golf diesel ECU,
  • 0281010302 / 038906019CJ – Golf / Bora 1.9 TDI,
  • 0261207189 / 036906032L – Golf / Bora petrol ECU,
  • 0261206518 / 06A906018CG – Golf / Bora 1.8T,
  • 0261206887 / 06A906032DR – Golf / Bora 1.8T.

This is why selecting a Golf ECU only from model generation or engine capacity can lead to an incorrect match.

Volkswagen and other VAG brands

Volkswagen shares platforms, engines and electronic systems with other brands within the Volkswagen Group. Certain ECU numbers may therefore appear in applications associated with Audi, Škoda or SEAT as well as Volkswagen.

This does not mean that every control unit with a related Bosch or VAG number is automatically interchangeable. Software, hardware, immobiliser data and vehicle configuration must still be verified.

Related categories include Audi engine control units, Škoda engine control units and SEAT engine control units.

Used / locked Volkswagen ECU

A standard used / locked Volkswagen ECU normally retains data from the donor vehicle, including vehicle-specific configuration and, depending on the ECU generation, information associated with the immobiliser system.

Such a module may require electronic preparation and subsequent programming before it can operate correctly in another vehicle.

Volkswagen ECU ready for programming

Many current Volkswagen products are available in a locked or ready-for-programming variant. The exact type of preparation available depends on the ECU and vehicle application.

After installation, programming, adaptation, immobiliser synchronisation or other vehicle-specific procedures may be required. Not every ECU supports every preparation method.

More information is available on the ECU preparation options page.

VIRGIN and reset Volkswagen ECU

For selected Volkswagen engine control units, a module may be reset or otherwise prepared for subsequent vehicle adaptation. This is commonly described as a VIRGIN or prepared ECU.

The exact meaning and required installation procedure depend on the ECU family. A VIRGIN unit should therefore not automatically be treated as Plug & Play.

Programming or immobiliser-related adaptation may still be required after installation.

Volkswagen ECU cloning

For selected compatible modules, Volkswagen ECU cloning may be another preparation solution. If the required data can be correctly read from the original control unit, relevant information can be transferred to a suitable replacement ECU.

Depending on the control-unit generation, this may include EEPROM or FLASH data, software, configuration, VIN and immobiliser-related information.

The possibility of cloning depends on the ECU type and the condition of the original module. If the required data cannot be recovered, another preparation method may be necessary.

Volkswagen ECU programming and immobiliser adaptation

Replacement of a Volkswagen engine control unit may require programming or adaptation to the vehicle. The procedure depends on the vehicle generation, immobiliser system, ECU family and the way in which the replacement module has been prepared.

Workshops may use suitable VAG diagnostic and programming equipment for these procedures. The required operation should be determined for the specific vehicle rather than assuming that every EDC17, MED17 or older ECU is adapted in exactly the same way.

Why matching only EDC17 or MED17 is not enough

An ECU-family designation describes the general engine-management system but does not identify the exact module.

For example:

  • EDC17C46 is different from EDC17CP20,
  • EDC17CP20 is different from EDC17CP44,
  • two MED17.5.5 modules may carry completely different VW and Bosch numbers.

The correct identification sequence should therefore include:

  • complete Volkswagen OEM part number,
  • Bosch, Continental, Siemens or other manufacturer reference,
  • ECU family such as EDC17C46 or MED17.5.5,
  • engine and vehicle information,
  • hardware and software identification where required.

Common symptoms that may indicate a Volkswagen ECU problem

An engine control-unit fault can produce different symptoms, but similar problems may also be caused by sensors, wiring, actuators, fuel-system components or power-supply faults.

  • engine does not start,
  • no diagnostic communication with the ECU,
  • engine stalls or is difficult to restart,
  • limp mode or reduced engine power,
  • injector or ignition-control faults,
  • fuel-pressure or turbocharger-control faults,
  • incorrect electronic throttle response,
  • CAN communication errors,
  • fault codes that repeatedly return,
  • internal ECU memory or electronic faults.

Before replacing the control unit, check battery voltage, ECU power supplies and grounds, fuses, relays, electrical connectors and wiring. A diagnostic trouble code alone does not prove that the ECU itself is defective.

Volkswagen engine control units by exact part number

Searching by complete VW and electronics manufacturer references is one of the most accurate ways to locate the correct replacement ECU:

How to check Volkswagen ECU compatibility before ordering

Take a clear photo of the complete original ECU label. The Volkswagen OEM number, Bosch, Continental, Siemens or other electronics manufacturer reference and the ECU-family designation should all be readable.

If you need help identifying the correct module, contact Auto24Parts and send the photo together with the Volkswagen model, model year, engine capacity, power output and engine version.

For other vehicle makes, browse the complete engine control unit catalogue. Other Volkswagen electronic components can also be found in the Volkswagen ABS pump category.

FAQ – Volkswagen ECU and Engine Control Units

Question Answer
How do I find the correct Volkswagen ECU? Compare the complete Volkswagen OEM number with the Bosch, Continental, Siemens or other electronics manufacturer reference printed on the original module. The ECU family and vehicle information should be used as additional verification.
What do numbers such as 03L906, 03C906 or 06J906 mean? They are parts of Volkswagen Group OEM reference families used on various electronic modules. The complete number, including all final letters, must be checked because the prefix alone does not confirm ECU compatibility.
Are 0281017157 and 03L906018FM references for the same Volkswagen ECU? Yes. These references appear together on the corresponding Volkswagen EDC17C46 control unit. The Bosch number may also be written as 0 281 017 157.
Are 0261S06066 and 06J906026FK the same Volkswagen ECU? These references appear together on the corresponding Volkswagen MED17.5 petrol engine control unit in the Auto24Parts catalogue.
Is every MED17.5.5 Volkswagen ECU interchangeable? No. Different MED17.5.5 modules can carry different Volkswagen and Bosch part numbers. The complete OEM and manufacturer references must still be checked.
What is the difference between EDC17C46 and EDC17CP44? They are different ECU-family designations used in different engine-management applications. The family name helps narrow the search but does not replace the exact VW and Bosch part numbers.
Does a used Volkswagen ECU require programming? It depends on the ECU type and preparation variant. A standard used / locked module may require preparation, programming and immobiliser-related adaptation, while selected units can be supplied ready for further programming or in another prepared version.
What is a VIRGIN Volkswagen ECU? A VIRGIN or reset ECU is a module prepared for subsequent adaptation to another vehicle. The exact procedure after installation depends on the ECU family and vehicle, and programming may still be required.
Can a Volkswagen ECU be cloned? Cloning may be possible for selected compatible control units when the required data can be correctly read from the original ECU. Availability depends on the ECU design and condition of the original module.
Can an Audi, Škoda or SEAT ECU fit a Volkswagen? Some VAG applications share related engines and electronic systems, but this does not make all modules interchangeable. Exact OEM number, manufacturer reference, hardware, software and vehicle configuration must be checked.
Can two Volkswagen ECUs with identical connectors be different? Yes. Similar housings and connectors do not confirm identical hardware, software, calibration or immobiliser data. The complete part numbers should always be compared.
Can no communication with a Volkswagen ECU be caused by something else? Yes. Missing power or ground, damaged wiring, fuses, relays, connectors or CAN-network faults can also cause loss of ECU communication. These should be checked before replacing the control unit.
What should I send to check Volkswagen ECU compatibility? Send a clear photo of the complete original ECU label together with the Volkswagen model, model year, engine capacity, power output and engine version. All VW and electronics manufacturer references should be readable.
