Chevrolet engine control units – ECU identification by GM and manufacturer number

A Chevrolet engine control unit (ECU), also known as an ECM or engine computer, manages the operation of the engine and exchanges information with other electronic systems in the vehicle. Depending on the engine and ECU generation, the module may control fuel injection, ignition, electronic throttle operation, fuel pressure, turbocharger management and selected emissions-related functions.

For replacement purposes, however, the most important issue is identifying the exact control unit fitted to the vehicle. Chevrolet has used different engine-management systems from GM and electronics manufacturers such as Bosch, Continental and Delphi. Two modules can have very similar housings and connectors while containing different hardware, software and vehicle-specific configuration.

Chevrolet GM and OEM ECU numbers

Many Chevrolet engine control modules are identified by an OEM or GM number consisting mainly of eight digits. Examples currently found in the Auto24Parts catalogue include:

A characteristic group of Chevrolet control units also carries electronic references beginning with 5WY. These numbers are especially useful as an additional identifier when the vehicle OEM number alone is not sufficient.

Searching using both the GM / Chevrolet number and the 5WY reference is normally more accurate than searching only for a vehicle model such as “Chevrolet Cruze ECU”.

Chevrolet Aveo 1.2 – 5WY5992A / 25184299 N3

One of the current products is the Chevrolet Aveo 1.2 ECU 5WY5992A / 25184299 / N3.

The module carries the electronics reference 5WY5992A together with Chevrolet / GM number 25184299 and additional designation N3. These markings should be compared with the complete original ECU label before ordering.

Chevrolet Aveo – 5WY5968C / 96983177

Another Aveo control unit currently listed in the category carries references 5WY5968C and 96983177.

This illustrates why the description “Chevrolet Aveo ECU” is not sufficiently precise. Different Aveo versions can use different ECU numbers even when the modules look similar externally.

Chevrolet Aveo 1.4 – 96436779 XAJZ

The catalogue also contains a Chevrolet Aveo 1.4 engine control module identified by 96436779 with the additional designation XAJZ.

Suffixes and calibration-style references such as XAJZ should not be ignored. They can help distinguish one control-unit version from another module carrying a similar GM number.

Chevrolet Captiva – Bosch 0281014296 / 96858577GA

Chevrolet diesel applications also use Bosch engine-management systems. One current example is the Chevrolet Captiva Bosch ECU 0281014296 / 96858577GA.

The Bosch reference may also be written as 0 281 014 296. When selecting this module, the Bosch number and complete Chevrolet / GM reference should be checked together.

This is a different numbering system from the 5WY modules used in several Aveo, Cruze and Spark applications, which is another reason to identify the exact ECU from its label rather than from vehicle model alone.

Chevrolet Cruze – 25181013 / 5WY1J11A / AAGR

One Chevrolet Cruze ECU in the current catalogue carries the references 25181013, 5WY1J11A and AAGR.

All three identifiers can be useful when searching for the module. The additional four-letter designation should be retained together with the main GM and electronics manufacturer numbers.

Chevrolet Cruze – GM 25181280 / AAG5 / 5WY1J12A

Another separate Cruze unit is the Chevrolet Cruze ECU GM 25181280 / AAG5 / 5WY1J12A.

This product demonstrates how several references can appear on one engine controller: the main GM number 25181280, designation AAG5 and electronics reference 5WY1J12A.

The product is currently offered with locked and unlocked / ready-for-programming variants. The exact preparation method required should be selected according to the vehicle and the work that will be performed after installation.

Different Chevrolet Cruze ECU numbers are not automatically interchangeable

The current catalogue contains several Cruze control units, including:

All are described for Chevrolet Cruze, but they carry different identification numbers. The model name alone therefore cannot confirm compatibility.

The complete number 96419331 and additional designation XAKF should be compared with the original module. Another Lacetti engine or production version may use a different control unit.

Chevrolet Matiz – 5WY5403F / 96417290

For Chevrolet Matiz, one current control unit is the Chevrolet Matiz ECU 5WY5403F / 96417290 / 96417290PZ.

This module can therefore be searched using the electronics reference 5WY5403F, GM number 96417290 or extended reference 96417290PZ.

Using all available numbers increases the accuracy of identification and reduces the risk of confusing the ECU with another Matiz control unit.

Chevrolet Spark – 25191187 / 5WY1W20A

For Chevrolet Spark, Auto24Parts currently lists the Chevrolet Spark ECU 25191187 / 5WY1W20A.

The Chevrolet number 25191187 and electronics reference 5WY1W20A provide two separate search routes to the same module.

Chevrolet Spark – 25191188 / 5WY1V27A

The catalogue also contains another Spark engine control unit identified by 25191188 / 5WY1V27A.

The difference of only one digit between 25191187 and 25191188 does not mean that the modules are the same. The corresponding 5WY references are also different, so the complete label must be checked.

GM, Bosch, Continental and Delphi Chevrolet ECUs

Chevrolet vehicles use engine-management modules from different electronics suppliers. The current category includes products classified under GM, Bosch, Continental and Delphi as well as other original modules.

For Bosch applications, you can also browse Bosch automotive control units.

The electronics manufacturer is useful for narrowing the search, but it does not replace the complete Chevrolet / GM reference. Similar units from the same manufacturer can contain different hardware or software.

Why the complete Chevrolet ECU label is important

A replacement engine computer should not be selected solely by the shape of the housing, connectors or vehicle model. The preferred identification sequence is:

• complete Chevrolet / GM OEM number,
• 5WY, Bosch, Continental, Delphi or other manufacturer reference,
• additional calibration or version code such as AAG5, AAGR, N3 or XAKF,
• vehicle model and production year,
• engine capacity and engine version,
• hardware and software references where required.

Used / locked Chevrolet engine control unit

A standard used / locked Chevrolet ECU normally retains data from the vehicle in which it was previously installed. Depending on the ECU type, it may require electronic preparation before use in another vehicle.

This type of module is mainly intended for workshops and automotive electronics specialists equipped to programme, reset or adapt replacement engine control units.

Chevrolet ECU ready for programming

Selected Chevrolet control units can be supplied in an unlocked / ready-for-programming version. The available preparation depends on the ECU type and vehicle application.

Additional programming, coding, security synchronisation or configuration may be required after installation. Not every Chevrolet ECU supports exactly the same preparation method.

Chevrolet ECU cloning

For selected compatible modules, Chevrolet ECU cloning may be another possible solution. If the required data can be correctly read from the original ECU, relevant vehicle-specific information may be transferred to a compatible replacement control unit.

Depending on the module design, the transferred information may include memory data, software, configuration, VIN and immobiliser-related data.

The possibility of cloning depends on the type and condition of the original ECU. If the necessary information cannot be recovered, another preparation method may be required.

Common symptoms that may indicate a Chevrolet ECU problem

A faulty engine control unit can cause different symptoms, but similar problems may also result from sensors, wiring, actuators, fuel-system components, power-supply faults or communication problems.

• engine does not start,
• no diagnostic communication with the ECU,
• engine stalls or is difficult to restart,
• limp mode or reduced engine power,
• injector or ignition-control faults,
• incorrect throttle response,
• fuel-pressure or boost-control problems,
• communication errors between electronic modules,
• fault codes that repeatedly return,
• internal ECU memory or electronics faults.

Before replacing the ECU, check battery voltage, control-unit power supply, grounds, fuses, relays, connectors and the wiring harness. A diagnostic trouble code alone does not prove that the engine control unit itself is defective.
