Volvo ECU & Engine Control Modules – V40, S40, V70 and 850
Volvo ECU – engine control units by OEM, Siemens, Denso and Mitsubishi number
The correct Volvo engine control unit should be selected using the complete references printed on the original ECU label. Depending on the vehicle generation, Volvo modules may carry OEM references such as 30616815, 30729274A, 30785520AA, 30788975 or older P-prefixed numbers together with an additional Siemens, Continental, Denso, Mitsubishi or other electronics manufacturer reference.
The Auto24Parts range includes engine computers for Volvo V40, S40, V50, V70, 440, 460, 850 and 960. Characteristic manufacturer references include 5WS..., S108..., S110..., S180..., MB079700... and E2T.... Similar-looking modules may contain different hardware, software or vehicle-specific data, so the complete numbers should always be compared. Depending on the exact ECU, locked, ready-for-programming or other preparation variants may be available. See our ECU preparation options.
If you are unsure which Volvo ECU matches your vehicle, send Auto24Parts a clear photo of the complete original ECU label together with the model, year, engine capacity and engine version, or browse the complete engine control unit catalogue.

Volvo engine control units – ECU identification by Volvo and manufacturer part number
A Volvo engine control unit (ECU), also known as an ECM or engine computer, manages engine operation and communicates with other electronic systems in the vehicle. Depending on the engine and ECU generation, the module may control fuel injection, ignition, electronic throttle operation, fuel pressure, turbocharger management and selected emissions-related functions.
When replacing a Volvo ECU, however, the most important step is identifying the exact electronic module fitted to the vehicle. Volvo has used engine-management systems from several electronics manufacturers across different generations. Two modules with similar housings and connectors may still contain different hardware, software or vehicle-specific data.
Volvo ECU numbers – 306, 307, 308 and older P-prefixed references
A characteristic feature of many Volvo electronic modules is the use of OEM references beginning with 306..., 307... or 308.... Older Volvo engine control units can also use references beginning with P....
Examples currently found in the Auto24Parts Volvo ECU range include:
- P30614639,
- P30616815,
- 30729274A,
- 30785520AA,
- 30788975,
- 30857568,
- P1275339,
- P01275678,
- P09148498.
The beginning of the number can help narrow the search, but the complete Volvo reference must always be retained. Numbers from the same general sequence should not automatically be considered interchangeable.
Why does a Volvo ECU have several different numbers?
A Volvo engine control unit can carry both a Volvo reference and an additional number assigned by the electronics manufacturer. Depending on the module, the original label may therefore include:
- Volvo OEM or P-prefixed number,
- Siemens 5WS... or S... reference,
- Continental S180... reference,
- Denso MB... reference,
- Mitsubishi E2T... or MR... reference,
- ECU-family identification such as SID803A,
- additional hardware, software or calibration codes.
Searching using two or more references from the original label normally gives a more precise result than searching only for “Volvo ECU”.
Volvo 30785520AA / 5WS40328BT / SID803A
One of the most distinctive current products is the Volvo ECU 30785520AA / 5WS40328BT / SID803A.
The complete identification includes:
- 30785520AA,
- 5WS40328BT,
- 5WS40328B-T,
- D1.G,
- SID803A.
This is a good example of why the complete label is important. The SID803A family designation alone does not identify the exact Volvo module, while the 5WS and Volvo numbers provide more precise search information.
Volvo V70 – 5WS40092I-T / 5WS40092IT / D1.A
For Volvo V70, the current catalogue contains the Volvo V70 Siemens ECU 5WS40092I-T / 5WS40092IT / D1.A.
The manufacturer reference can appear both with and without the separator: 5WS40092I-T or 5WS40092IT. Both formats are useful when comparing ECU labels, workshop documentation and online searches.
The product is currently offered with locked and ready-for-programming variants.
Volvo 440 / 460 1.8 – Siemens S111705113C / 47347701
Older Volvo petrol electronics are represented by the Volvo 440 / 460 1.8 Siemens ECU S111705113C / 47347701.
The module carries several forms of the same identification:
- S111705113 C,
- S111705113C,
- 473477/01,
- 47347701.
This is useful for exact-number SEO because older parts catalogues and ECU labels may use different spacing or separators for the same reference.
Volvo S110602004B / P30616815
Another Siemens module currently available is the Volvo ECU S110602004B / P30616815.
This product combines Siemens reference S110602004B with Volvo number P30616815. Both should be compared with the original ECU before ordering.
The current product page offers locked and ready-for-programming variants.
Volvo V40 2.0 – S108212004E / P30614639
For Volvo V40 2.0, Auto24Parts lists the Volvo V40 ECU S108212004E / P30614639.
This is another example of the Siemens-style S... numbering used alongside a Volvo P-prefixed OEM reference.
Because different V40 engine versions use different control units, the vehicle description “Volvo V40 ECU” is only an initial search term. Final identification should be based on the complete label.
Volvo S180134001B / 30788975 / J38AC – Continental ECU
A later Continental-family module currently in the range is the Volvo ECU S180134001B / 30788975 / J38AC.
The three useful identifiers are:
- S180134001B,
- 30788975,
- J38AC.
The product is identified as a Continental unit and is currently listed with locked and ready-for-programming options.
Volvo Denso MB079700-8840 / 08642193A
Volvo engine electronics are not limited to Siemens and Continental systems. The current catalogue also includes the Volvo Denso ECU MB079700-8840 / 08642193A / 08642193.
This module combines the Denso reference MB079700-8840 with Volvo-style numbers 08642193A and 08642193.
The Denso MB... numbering provides a completely different search route from Siemens 5WS/S... or Continental S180... modules and is therefore particularly useful when identifying the exact replacement ECU.
Volvo V40 – Mitsubishi E2T70480H / MR578057
The current Volvo range also contains Mitsubishi-manufactured engine electronics. One example is the Volvo V40 ECU Mitsubishi E2T70480H / MR578057.
The electronics manufacturer reference E2T70480H is combined with MR578057. Both numbers should be checked with the original module.
The product is currently listed in locked and ready-for-programming variants.
Volvo V40 / S40 – MR420429 / E2T70476H
Another Mitsubishi module is the Volvo V40 / S40 ECU MR420429 / E2T70476H.
This example is particularly useful because it carries a Mitsubishi-style MR... number together with an E2T... electronics reference.
MR420429 / E2T70476H and MR578057 / E2T70480H are separate modules and should not be considered interchangeable simply because both are Mitsubishi ECUs used in Volvo applications.
Volvo V50 / S40 – 30729274A / B371
For Volvo V50 and S40, the range also includes the Volvo ECU 30729274A / B371.
This module demonstrates another type of Volvo identification where a main OEM number is accompanied by a shorter version or calibration code.
The complete reference should be compared with the original ECU rather than selecting the module only from the S40 or V50 model name.
Volvo 960 – P09148498 / 1TVW016575 / T97110698
Older Volvo generations are also represented in the current range. For Volvo 960, Auto24Parts lists the Volvo 960 ECU P09148498 / 1TVW016575 / T97110698.
This Aisin module uses a completely different numbering system from later Siemens, Continental, Denso and Mitsubishi products.
The example illustrates how broad the Volvo ECU catalogue is in terms of electronics generations and why selecting by model name alone can be unreliable.
Volvo 850 engine control units
The current category also contains ECU references for the Volvo 850 generation, including:
- S103955403H / P1275339 – Volvo 850 2.5,
- P01275678 / FA.2 – Volvo 850.
These older P-prefixed references belong to a different generation from later Volvo 306... and 307... numbers. Exact-number identification is therefore especially important when sourcing electronics for older vehicles.
Siemens and SID engine control units for Volvo
Siemens engine electronics form a particularly visible group in the current Volvo category. Available references include several S... and 5WS... modules, including:
- 5WS40092I-T / 5WS40092IT,
- S111705113C,
- 5WS40328BT / SID803A,
- S110602004B,
- S108212004E.
The complete Siemens reference should be checked together with any Volvo OEM, software, hardware or family designation visible on the label.
Other products from this manufacturer can be found in the Siemens automotive electronics section.
Continental, Denso, Mitsubishi and Aisin Volvo ECUs
The current Volvo range also demonstrates that the brand has used engine electronics from several other manufacturers. Examples include:
- Continental S180134001B / 30788975,
- Denso MB079700-8840 / 08642193A,
- Mitsubishi E2T70480H / MR578057,
- Mitsubishi E2T70476H / MR420429,
- Aisin P09148498 / 1TVW016575.
The manufacturer name is useful for narrowing the search, but it does not replace comparison of the complete part numbers.
Volvo V40 and S40 – several different ECU manufacturers
V40 and S40 are particularly good examples of why a replacement ECU should not be selected only by model name. Current Volvo products for these models include several very different references:
- S108212004E / P30614639 – V40 2.0,
- E2T70480H / MR578057 – V40,
- MR420429 / E2T70476H – V40 / S40,
- 30729274A / B371 – V50 / S40.
These modules belong to different electronics platforms and should be identified individually using the complete ECU label.
Used / locked Volvo ECU
A standard used / locked Volvo engine control unit may retain vehicle-specific data from the vehicle in which it was previously installed. Depending on the ECU generation and vehicle security system, additional electronic preparation may therefore be required before installation in another vehicle.
This type of module is mainly intended for workshops and automotive electronics specialists equipped to prepare and programme replacement control units.
Volvo ECU ready for programming
Many current Volvo products are available in locked and ready-for-programming variants. The available preparation depends on the exact ECU and vehicle.
Programming, coding, configuration or security-related adaptation may still be required after installation depending on the module and how it has been prepared.
See our ECU preparation options for more information.
VIRGIN Volvo ECU
For selected Volvo control units, the ECU may be reset or otherwise prepared for subsequent adaptation to another vehicle. This type of preparation can be described as VIRGIN.
The exact procedure depends on the ECU family and vehicle generation. A VIRGIN module should not automatically be considered Plug & Play unless the specific product description confirms this.
Volvo ECU cloning
For selected compatible control units, Volvo ECU cloning may be another preparation method. If the required information can be correctly read from the original ECU, relevant data may be transferred to a compatible replacement module.
Depending on the control-unit design, this can include memory content, software, configuration and security-related information.
The possibility of cloning depends on the ECU type and condition of the original module. If the required data cannot be recovered correctly, another preparation method may be necessary.
Why the complete Volvo ECU label matters
A replacement Volvo engine computer should not be selected only by vehicle model, engine capacity, connector layout or housing shape. The preferred identification sequence is:
- complete Volvo OEM or P-prefixed number,
- Siemens, Continental, Denso, Mitsubishi, Aisin or other manufacturer reference,
- ECU-family identification such as SID803A where present,
- additional hardware and software references,
- vehicle model and production year,
- engine capacity and engine version,
- transmission and relevant vehicle configuration where required.
Common symptoms that may indicate a Volvo ECU problem
A defective engine control unit can cause different symptoms, but similar problems may also result from sensors, wiring, actuators, power-supply faults or communication problems.
- engine does not start,
- no diagnostic communication with the ECU,
- engine stalls or is difficult to restart,
- limp mode or reduced engine power,
- injector or ignition-control faults,
- incorrect throttle response,
- fuel-pressure or turbocharger-control problems,
- communication errors between electronic modules,
- fault codes that repeatedly return,
- internal ECU memory or electronics faults.
Before replacing the ECU, check battery voltage, module power supply, ground connections, fuses, relays, connectors and vehicle wiring. A diagnostic trouble code alone does not prove that the engine control unit itself is defective.
Volvo engine control units by exact part number
