Porsche Engine Control Units: ECU, ECM and Engine Computer

An engine control unit, also called an ECU, ECM or engine computer, is an electronic module that manages engine operation based on signals from sensors. When it fails, the car may not start, the engine warning light may come on and the diagnostic tester may be unable to connect to the control unit.

How to choose a control unit for a Porsche by part number

Model, year and engine capacity are often not enough, because the same model can come with different versions of the control unit. Before buying, compare:

• the part number, for example 022906032GF, 022906032LJ or 99661860102,
• the control unit manufacturer's number, for example 0261208668, 0261204604 or 5WP46501,
• the full designation, including the trailing letters and digits,
• the model and engine designation given in the listing, for example Cayenne 4.8 V8 or Boxster 2.5.

A similar housing and identical connectors do not confirm that two control units are compatible.

Engine control unit variants

Engine control units may be offered in several variants: locked (with data from the previous vehicle), unlocked (for example Virgin, with a PIN code or CAR PASS, IMMO OFF or Plug and Play) or as a full set.
