The engine control unit is an electronic device that monitors the functioning of the drivetrain. It can control the combustion parameters, the fuel-air mixture ration, as well as ignition and fuel injection thanks to a number of sensors located in various parts of the car. It monitors the temperature and many parameters that are important for proper engine operation.
Symptoms of a faulty engine controller (ECU)
The engine control unit, like any other car component, can fail, e.g. due to damaged electronic components or software problems. Malfunctioning can also be caused by a lack of sensor readings, in which case you may notice certain signs that could indicate a malfunction. One of such signs may be that the engine is difficult to start, and this may be due to a lack of fuel supply; you may also notice irregular engine operation. This will lead e.g. to excessive fuel combustion; occasionally you can notice some symptoms by observing the exhaust pipe, it could be an unusual colour of the exhaust fumes. Some of the symptoms may also come from other components of the car so finding the problem can be tricky. In the case of a faulty ECU, you should go to a mechanic who specialises in this type of repair and has the appropriate diagnostic equipment to detect the problem quickly.
Engine controller replacement
In many cases, however, the repair may not be cost-effective; for example, expensive electronic components may have to be brought in, and there is also the mechanic’s hourly rate. For some car models it may take a long time, even several weeks, to obtain the controller from the manufacturer, or a new controller may not be available for older models. If this is the case, you can look for companies that offer remanufactured engine controllers. This means a device that worked properly in a car, and was after some time expertly repaired and tested so that you can use it in your car. Buying a new replacement part will not always be a good solution because of compatibility. A lot of remanufactured engine controllers for various car models can be purchased at Engine controller repair; these are professionally refurbished controllers that you can match to your car model. As a result, you do not have to wait for the controller to be brought in, and the replacement can be made quickly.
