The automatic transmission control unit (often designated as TCU or TCM) is a crucial electronic component responsible for smooth and trouble-free gear shifting. Its failure, most often caused by overheating, short circuits, or water damage, results in jerking, an inability to shift gears, or the vehicle entering limp mode. Purchasing a new module at an authorized dealership is a massive expense, which is why replacing it with a fully functional, used original is the most reasonable solution.

Important: Depending on the ECU type and vehicle model, not all of the options listed below may be available.
To select the correct option for your vehicle and ECU, please contact us before purchasing:

1. Locked
This option is intended for professional workshops with the required specialist equipment and technical knowledge.
The ECU has been removed from a vehicle intended for recycling and still contains the immobilizer data and other information from the previous vehicle. Before it can be used in another car, it must be unlocked and then programmed using specialist automotive diagnostic equipment.
2. Unlocked
Several preparation methods may be available. The possible options depend on the ECU type, vehicle model and immobilizer system. Please contact us before purchasing, as some preparation methods are not available for every ECU.
Our electronics specialists can prepare the ECU in one of the following ways:
a) ECU with PIN code (Car Pass)
The PIN code is supplied, but programming with a suitable diagnostic tool is still required. After installing the ECU, it must be reset using the supplied PIN code and then programmed to the vehicle’s immobilizer system.
b) VIRGIN ECU
The data from the previous vehicle is removed and the ECU is restored to a clean, factory-like state. After installation, it must be programmed to the vehicle using a compatible specialist diagnostic tool. Unless another preparation method is specified in the product description, this is the standard unlocking option for most of our ECUs.
c) Plug & Play – IMMO OFF
The immobilizer function is disabled in the ECU. After installation, the engine can start without additional immobilizer programming. Please note that the vehicle will no longer have an active immobilizer function, and an immobilizer warning light or fault code may remain, depending on the vehicle model.
d) Plug & Play – Automatic Programming
After installation, the ECU automatically learns and saves the required vehicle data. No additional programming is normally required.
e) Plug & Play – 1:1 Clone
The data from your original ECU is copied to another fully functional ECU. The cloned unit is then ready for installation without additional programming.
You must send us your original ECU so that we can transfer its data to the replacement unit.
The original ECU must have working communication with the vehicle, a diagnostic tool or our programming equipment. If the required data cannot be read, a complete 1:1 clone may not be possible.
3. Complete Plug & Play Set
A complete matched set containing the ECU, immobilizer components and all other parts required to start the vehicle without additional programming. All components supplied in the set must be installed in the vehicle.
Important:
Dispatch time depends on the selected option. If an unlocked or specially prepared version is ordered, the preparation service usually requires an additional 1–2 business days.

How does the 06A906033DA ECU with number 5WP4023303 differ from the 5WP4028604 version?
Both units have the same VW number and Simos 7.1 family, but a different Siemens number. This unit, 5WP40233 03, comes from a 2004 Seat Altea – choose it if your current ECU carries the same number.
Engine Control Unit Volkswagen, Seat Altea Siemens Simos 7.1 06A906033DA 5WP4023303
The 2004 Seat Altea is one of the vehicles that used the Siemens Simos 7.1 ECU with VW number 06A906033DA; the number also appears in Volkswagen models. The Simos family covers Siemens/Continental petrol engine ECUs. The unit is responsible for fuel quantity, ignition and smooth engine running across the whole rev range.
Numbers on the label
- 06A906033DA – VW part number
- 5WP4023303 – Siemens number, shown on the label as 5WP40233 03
- Simos 7.1 – ECU family
Units with different Siemens numbers can be found under 06A906033DA. The 03 ending in 5WP40233 03 also matters, so compare both numbers, not just the VW number.
When to suspect the ECU
- the engine won't start and the fuel pump doesn't run,
- the engine warning light is on and there is no communication with the tester,
- rough running and misfires not caused by the spark plugs or coils,
- signs of water damage or corrosion on the circuit board or connector.
First rule out a fault in the wiring loom, earths and power supply – the most common causes of similar symptoms.
Before buying: choosing a version
Not every unlocking method suits every ECU. Whether PIN / CAR PASS, Virgin, IMMO OFF, auto programming or cloning is possible for the 06A906033DA depends on the part number, software and immobiliser – so please ask us before buying.
The choice itself is simple: the unlocked version is a unit prepared by us before dispatch (usually 1–2 working days), and the locked version is a unit with the previous vehicle's data and immobiliser, for workshops that unlock, program and match it themselves. More: ECU preparation options.
Questions and answers
Will the ECU fit an Altea from a different year?
---
The year of manufacture is not the deciding factor – what counts is matching VW and Siemens numbers. If your unit shows 06A906033DA and 5WP40233 03, it is the same type.
Is the unlocked version always available?
Not for every unit. Whether the unit can be prepared, and by which method, depends on the part number, software and immobiliser – so please ask before buying.
What is the technical condition of this part?
Used, in working order and in good condition. You will find the warranty period in the product features table.
Before ordering, you can send a photo of the label to contact@auto24parts.com – we'll compare the numbers and advise on the version.
