The automatic transmission control unit (often designated as TCU or TCM) is a crucial electronic component responsible for smooth and trouble-free gear shifting. Its failure, most often caused by overheating, short circuits, or water damage, results in jerking, an inability to shift gears, or the vehicle entering limp mode. Purchasing a new module at an authorized dealership is a massive expense, which is why replacing it with a fully functional, used original is the most reasonable solution.

Important: Depending on the ECU type and vehicle model, not all of the options listed below may be available.

1. Locked
This option is intended for professional workshops with the required specialist equipment and technical knowledge.
The ECU has been removed from a vehicle intended for recycling and still contains the immobilizer data and other information from the previous vehicle. Before it can be used in another car, it must be unlocked and then programmed using specialist automotive diagnostic equipment.
2. Unlocked
Several preparation methods may be available. The possible options depend on the ECU type, vehicle model and immobilizer system. Please contact us before purchasing, as some preparation methods are not available for every ECU.
Our electronics specialists can prepare the ECU in one of the following ways:
a) ECU with PIN code (Car Pass)
The PIN code is supplied, but programming with a suitable diagnostic tool is still required. After installing the ECU, it must be reset using the supplied PIN code and then programmed to the vehicle’s immobilizer system.
b) VIRGIN ECU
The data from the previous vehicle is removed and the ECU is restored to a clean, factory-like state. After installation, it must be programmed to the vehicle using a compatible specialist diagnostic tool. Unless another preparation method is specified in the product description, this is the standard unlocking option for most of our ECUs.
c) Plug & Play – IMMO OFF
The immobilizer function is disabled in the ECU. After installation, the engine can start without additional immobilizer programming. Please note that the vehicle will no longer have an active immobilizer function, and an immobilizer warning light or fault code may remain, depending on the vehicle model.
d) Plug & Play – Automatic Programming
After installation, the ECU automatically learns and saves the required vehicle data. No additional programming is normally required.
e) Plug & Play – 1:1 Clone
The data from your original ECU is copied to another fully functional ECU. The cloned unit is then ready for installation without additional programming.
You must send us your original ECU so that we can transfer its data to the replacement unit.
The original ECU must have working communication with the vehicle, a diagnostic tool or our programming equipment. If the required data cannot be read, a complete 1:1 clone may not be possible.
3. Complete Plug & Play Set
A complete matched set containing the ECU, immobilizer components and all other parts required to start the vehicle without additional programming. All components supplied in the set must be installed in the vehicle.
Important:
Dispatch time depends on the selected option. If an unlocked or specially prepared version is ordered, the preparation service usually requires an additional 1–2 business days.

Looking for a 03G906021GD ECU for an Octavia 2.0 TDI?
This used Bosch unit, numbered 0281013160, comes from an Octavia with the 2.0 TDI engine and is fully working. Before you order, compare the number 03G906021GD with the label on your ECU – including the letters at the end.
Engine Control Unit Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI Bosch 03G906021GD 0281013160
When an Octavia 2.0 TDI will not start or the diagnostic tool cannot see the engine control unit, the unit itself is sometimes to blame. The 03G906021GD ECU controls the diesel engine: fuel quantity, injection timing and turbo boost. It is made by Bosch, which gave it the number 0 281 013 160.
Numbers on the label
- 03G906021GD – VW/Skoda number; the same number with the letters GD should be on your ECU,
- 0281013160 – Bosch number (on the label: 0 281 013 160); the 0 281 series covers diesel engine control units.
Do not go by the car model alone. 03G906021 units come in many variants – they differ in the letters at the end, which denote different software or hardware.
Symptoms that may point to the ECU
- the engine warning light stays on and internal ECU faults are stored in the memory,
- no response to the accelerator pedal, or cutting out while driving,
- the engine will not start despite a working power supply and fuel delivery,
- no communication with the diagnostic tool.
Before buying, it is worth reading the fault codes with a diagnostic tool and inspecting the loom connectors – corroded pins can cause the same symptoms.
How will we prepare the ECU?
You have two options. The first is an unlocked ECU: we prepare it in-house before dispatch, which usually takes 1–2 working days. The second is the locked version – with the previous car's data and immobiliser, intended for workshops that unlock, program and match ECUs themselves.
Various methods are used for unlocking: PIN / CAR PASS, Virgin, IMMO OFF, auto programming or cloning. Which one will work for 03G906021GD depends on the part number, software version and immobiliser – ask us before ordering. More on the ECU preparation options page.
Questions and answers
Can I fit the 03G906021GD in place of a unit with a different suffix?
---
We do not recommend it without checking with us first. A different letter means a different software or hardware version – email us the numbers from your ECU.
What do I need to provide when ordering the unlocked version?
The numbers from the label of your current unit, ideally with a photo of it. This lets us choose the preparation method.
Is the ECU in working order?
Yes, it is a used, fully working unit in good condition. You will find the warranty period in the product specification table.
If in doubt, email contact@auto24parts.com – we will help you compare the numbers.
