The automatic transmission control unit (often designated as TCU or TCM) is a crucial electronic component responsible for smooth and trouble-free gear shifting. Its failure, most often caused by overheating, short circuits, or water damage, results in jerking, an inability to shift gears, or the vehicle entering limp mode. Purchasing a new module at an authorized dealership is a massive expense, which is why replacing it with a fully functional, used original is the most reasonable solution.

Important: Depending on the ECU type and vehicle model, not all of the options listed below may be available.
To select the correct option for your vehicle and ECU, please contact us before purchasing:

1. Locked
This option is intended for professional workshops with the required specialist equipment and technical knowledge.
The ECU has been removed from a vehicle intended for recycling and still contains the immobilizer data and other information from the previous vehicle. Before it can be used in another car, it must be unlocked and then programmed using specialist automotive diagnostic equipment.
2. Unlocked
Several preparation methods may be available. The possible options depend on the ECU type, vehicle model and immobilizer system. Please contact us before purchasing, as some preparation methods are not available for every ECU.
Our electronics specialists can prepare the ECU in one of the following ways:
a) ECU with PIN code (Car Pass)
The PIN code is supplied, but programming with a suitable diagnostic tool is still required. After installing the ECU, it must be reset using the supplied PIN code and then programmed to the vehicle’s immobilizer system.
b) VIRGIN ECU
The data from the previous vehicle is removed and the ECU is restored to a clean, factory-like state. After installation, it must be programmed to the vehicle using a compatible specialist diagnostic tool. Unless another preparation method is specified in the product description, this is the standard unlocking option for most of our ECUs.
c) Plug & Play – IMMO OFF
The immobilizer function is disabled in the ECU. After installation, the engine can start without additional immobilizer programming. Please note that the vehicle will no longer have an active immobilizer function, and an immobilizer warning light or fault code may remain, depending on the vehicle model.
d) Plug & Play – Automatic Programming
After installation, the ECU automatically learns and saves the required vehicle data. No additional programming is normally required.
e) Plug & Play – 1:1 Clone
The data from your original ECU is copied to another fully functional ECU. The cloned unit is then ready for installation without additional programming.
You must send us your original ECU so that we can transfer its data to the replacement unit.
The original ECU must have working communication with the vehicle, a diagnostic tool or our programming equipment. If the required data cannot be read, a complete 1:1 clone may not be possible.
3. Complete Plug & Play Set
A complete matched set containing the ECU, immobilizer components and all other parts required to start the vehicle without additional programming. All components supplied in the set must be installed in the vehicle.
Important:
Dispatch time depends on the selected option. If an unlocked or specially prepared version is ordered, the preparation service usually requires an additional 1–2 business days.

What does the number 5WP42633AA on the 03L906023DD ECU mean?
It is the manufacturer number – Continental (formerly Siemens VDO) marks its ECUs with 5WP numbers. On the label it is written as 5WP42633 AA, next to the VW number 03L906023DD. The unit comes from a Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI.
Engine Control Unit Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI Continental 03L906023DD 5WP42633AA
Not every diesel ECU in the Octavia comes from Bosch. This unit was made by Continental, and in the VW/Skoda catalogue it has the number 03L906023DD. It works with the 1.6 TDI engine, handling fuel injection, turbo boost, starting and communication with the immobiliser. When it fails, the car often will not start at all.
Numbers on the label
- 03L906023DD – VW/Skoda part number,
- 5WP42633AA – Continental number, shown on the label as 5WP42633 AA.
The letters DD at the end of the VW number identify the unit version. A 03L906023 ECU with a different suffix may have different software, so compare the whole number.
ECU fault symptoms
- no start even though the starter motor works,
- engine warning light on and internal unit faults,
- loss of power and running in limp mode,
- no communication via the diagnostic socket.
Start by checking the earths, power supply and the condition of the connectors – moisture in the plug can cause symptoms similar to a unit failure.
Two ECU options
We ship the 03L906023DD ECU locked or unlocked. The locked unit has the immobiliser and data of the previous car in its memory – it is chosen by workshops that handle unlocking, programming and matching themselves. The unlocked unit is prepared before dispatch; this usually takes 1–2 working days.
Not every method is possible for every unit: PIN / CAR PASS, Virgin, IMMO OFF, auto programming or cloning. It depends on the part number, software and the immobiliser in the car – ask us before buying. You will find a description on the ECU preparation options page.
Questions and answers
Are 5WP42633 AA and 5WP42633AA the same number?
---
Yes, only the notation differs – on the label the AA suffix is separated by a space.
Can I fit the unit without programming?
The locked version needs programming and matching. With the unlocked version, it depends on the method we agree before you buy.
What condition is the ECU in?
Used, fully working and in good condition. You will find the warranty period in the product specification table.
