The automatic transmission control unit (often designated as TCU or TCM) is a crucial electronic component responsible for smooth and trouble-free gear shifting. Its failure, most often caused by overheating, short circuits, or water damage, results in jerking, an inability to shift gears, or the vehicle entering limp mode. Purchasing a new module at an authorized dealership is a massive expense, which is why replacing it with a fully functional, used original is the most reasonable solution.

Important: Depending on the ECU type and vehicle model, not all of the options listed below may be available.

1. Locked
This option is intended for professional workshops with the required specialist equipment and technical knowledge.
The ECU has been removed from a vehicle intended for recycling and still contains the immobilizer data and other information from the previous vehicle. Before it can be used in another car, it must be unlocked and then programmed using specialist automotive diagnostic equipment.
2. Unlocked
Several preparation methods may be available. The possible options depend on the ECU type, vehicle model and immobilizer system. Please contact us before purchasing, as some preparation methods are not available for every ECU.
Our electronics specialists can prepare the ECU in one of the following ways:
a) ECU with PIN code (Car Pass)
The PIN code is supplied, but programming with a suitable diagnostic tool is still required. After installing the ECU, it must be reset using the supplied PIN code and then programmed to the vehicle’s immobilizer system.
b) VIRGIN ECU
The data from the previous vehicle is removed and the ECU is restored to a clean, factory-like state. After installation, it must be programmed to the vehicle using a compatible specialist diagnostic tool. Unless another preparation method is specified in the product description, this is the standard unlocking option for most of our ECUs.
c) Plug & Play – IMMO OFF
The immobilizer function is disabled in the ECU. After installation, the engine can start without additional immobilizer programming. Please note that the vehicle will no longer have an active immobilizer function, and an immobilizer warning light or fault code may remain, depending on the vehicle model.
d) Plug & Play – Automatic Programming
After installation, the ECU automatically learns and saves the required vehicle data. No additional programming is normally required.
e) Plug & Play – 1:1 Clone
The data from your original ECU is copied to another fully functional ECU. The cloned unit is then ready for installation without additional programming.
You must send us your original ECU so that we can transfer its data to the replacement unit.
The original ECU must have working communication with the vehicle, a diagnostic tool or our programming equipment. If the required data cannot be read, a complete 1:1 clone may not be possible.
3. Complete Plug & Play Set
A complete matched set containing the ECU, immobilizer components and all other parts required to start the vehicle without additional programming. All components supplied in the set must be installed in the vehicle.
Important:
Dispatch time depends on the selected option. If an unlocked or specially prepared version is ordered, the preparation service usually requires an additional 1–2 business days.

Where can I find the number 03G906021TB on the ECU casing?
Both numbers – VW 03G906021TB and Bosch 0281014711 (written 0 281 014 711) – are printed on the label on the unit's casing. This unit comes from a Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI; it is used, fully working and available in two versions.
Engine Control Unit Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI Bosch 03G906021TB 0281014711
Bosch is the manufacturer of this engine control unit – the number 0 281 014 711 belongs to the series the company uses for diesel engine units. In the Skoda Octavia with the 1.9 TDI engine, the 03G906021TB ECU oversees fuel injection, turbo boost and starting, and also works with the car's immobiliser.
How to identify this ECU
- 03G906021TB – VW/Skoda part number; the letters TB at the end identify a specific version,
- 0281014711 – Bosch hardware number, shown on the label as 0 281 014 711.
If your unit has a 03G906021 number with a suffix other than TB, contact us before buying – we will check whether the difference matters for your car.
Typical fault symptoms
- the engine runs intermittently and cuts out by itself,
- reduced power (limp mode) with no sensor fault,
- unable to connect with a diagnostic tool,
- damage after welding on the car or after connecting jump leads the wrong way round.
Start the diagnosis with the battery voltage and the earth leads – a weak battery often mimics an ECU failure.
Locked and unlocked options
If you choose the locked version, you receive the ECU exactly as it was removed – with the data and immobiliser of the previous Octavia. Your workshop then carries out the unlocking, programming and matching. The unlocked version requires work on our side before dispatch; this usually takes 1–2 working days.
Some units suit the PIN / CAR PASS code, others Virgin, IMMO OFF, auto programming or data cloning. It all depends on the part number, software and immobiliser, so before buying, ask what is possible for 03G906021TB. Description of the methods: ECU preparation options.
Questions and answers
Will the ECU start the engine as soon as it is plugged in?
---
The locked version will not – it has to be matched to the immobiliser. With the unlocked version, it depends on the agreed method.
I can see the number 0281014711 but cannot read the VW number. What should I do?
Send us a photo of the whole label – we will use it to identify the part number and check compatibility.
What about condition and warranty?
The ECU is used, fully working and in good condition. You will find the warranty period in the product specification table.
Send your questions to contact@auto24parts.com – we answer based on the numbers on the label.
