How to Find an ATE ABS Pump by Part Number

For ABS pumps, searching by the numbers printed directly on the original unit is one of the safest ways to identify the correct replacement. Vehicle model, production year or engine size alone are often not sufficient because several different ABS systems may have been fitted to the same vehicle range.

A complete ABS assembly may carry several different references at the same time:

  • vehicle manufacturer OE number,
  • ATE hydraulic-unit number,
  • electronic ABS control module number,
  • additional hardware, configuration or system references.

Common ATE numbering families include 10.0204..., 10.0206..., 10.0212..., 10.0220..., 10.0915..., 10.0960... and 10.0970....

The same reference may appear in two different formats. For example, 10.0206-0224.4 may also be written as 10020602244. It is therefore useful to search both formats while always comparing the complete reference.

A good example is the ATE ABS pump Audi / Volkswagen 1K0614517AB / 1K0907379AB / 10020602244 / 10096003613. This assembly carries both VAG OE references and separate ATE numbers identifying the hydraulic and electronic sections.

ATE MK60 – Hydraulic Unit and Electronic ABS Controller

One of the most recognisable ATE ABS system families is MK60. A complete HECU combines the hydraulic control unit with the electronic ABS controller. Depending on the version, the assembly can contain a valve block, pump motor, sensors and electronics responsible for ABS and vehicle-stability functions.

MK60-family systems are found in selected Audi, Volkswagen, Seat, Skoda, BMW, Ford, Mazda, Volvo and other vehicles. The MK60 designation alone does not mean that all units are interchangeable.

Within the VAG group, for example, you may find the ABS pump 6Q0614117C / 6Q0907379E for Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda, while selected Audi TT applications use units such as 8N0614517D / 8N0907379G / 10020600314 / 10096003243.

The complete ATE number and the vehicle OE reference should always be used to confirm the correct replacement.

ATE or Bosch – How to Identify the ABS System

The same vehicle generation can use ABS systems supplied by different manufacturers, including ATE and Bosch. This may depend on production year, equipment level, drivetrain and braking-system configuration.

An ATE ABS pump should not automatically be replaced with a Bosch unit simply because both were fitted to the same vehicle model or look similar. They belong to different system families and the original part numbers remain the primary identification method.

Common ATE ABS Pump Failures and Fault Symptoms

An ABS pump is an electro-hydraulic assembly operating under demanding conditions. With age, both the electronic and hydraulic sections can develop faults.

Problems encountered during diagnosis may include:

  • ABS pump motor failure or pump-motor control faults,
  • brake pressure sensor failure,
  • faults or sticking solenoid valves,
  • internal ABS / ESP control module failure,
  • no diagnostic communication with the ABS unit,
  • intermittent faults appearing after the electronics become warm,
  • CAN communication faults,
  • power-supply or ground problems,
  • corrosion of electrical connectors or housing,
  • moisture or water damage to the electronics,
  • contamination of the hydraulic section or incorrect pressure control.

Typical symptoms can include illuminated ABS, ESP or traction-control warning lights, loss of ABS operation during braking, ESP being disabled, braking-system fault messages or inability to communicate with the ABS controller using diagnostic equipment.

An ABS warning light does not automatically mean that the pump is defective. Similar symptoms can be caused by wheel-speed sensors, ABS reluctor rings, damaged wiring, fuses, poor ground connections or CAN communication problems.

Example ABS Fault Codes

Fault-code numbering depends on the vehicle manufacturer, ABS system generation and diagnostic equipment used. There is no single universal list of “ATE fault codes”. The following are examples of faults that may appear during ABS diagnosis:

A fault code alone should not be used as the only reason to replace an ABS pump. Power supply, wiring, sensors, communication and the complete diagnostic description should also be checked before ordering a replacement unit.

This depends on the vehicle and ABS system generation. In some older vehicles, a replacement pump with matching numbers may mainly require correct installation, proper brake-system bleeding and clearing stored fault codes.

Other vehicles may additionally require:

  • transfer of coding from the original ABS controller,
  • coding the replacement module to the vehicle specification,
  • steering-angle sensor adaptation,
  • calibration of acceleration or pressure sensors,
  • ABS pump bleeding procedures using diagnostic equipment.
