The electronics manufacturer can help narrow the search, but it should never replace the complete part-number comparison. Two Denso or Hitachi ECUs with similar housings may still contain different hardware, software or calibration data.

Common symptoms that may point to an ECU problem

An engine control unit can fail in different ways, but similar symptoms can also result from sensors, wiring, power-supply problems or other components. The ECU should therefore be diagnosed before being replaced.

• engine does not start,
• no diagnostic communication with the ECU,
• engine stalls or is difficult to restart,
• irregular engine operation,
• limp mode or reduced power,
• injector or ignition-control faults,
• incorrect throttle response,
• communication faults between vehicle modules,
• repeated fault codes after related components have been checked,
• internal ECU memory or electronics faults.

Before replacing a Subaru ECU, it is advisable to check battery voltage, ECU power supplies and grounds, fuses, relays, connectors and wiring. A fault code by itself does not prove that the engine control module is defective.

Used / locked Subaru ECU

A standard used ECU normally retains data from the vehicle in which it was previously installed. Depending on the module and vehicle, further preparation may be required before it can be used as a replacement.
