SEAT engine control units – ECU identification by VAG and manufacturer part number

A SEAT engine control unit (ECU), also known as an ECM or engine computer, manages engine operation and exchanges information with other vehicle systems. Depending on the engine and ECU generation, the module may control fuel injection, ignition, fuel pressure, turbocharger operation, electronic throttle control and selected emissions-related systems.

For replacement purposes, however, the most important task is identifying the exact ECU fitted to the vehicle. SEAT uses electronic systems shared across Volkswagen Group platforms, but similar housings, connectors or ECU-family names do not automatically mean that modules are interchangeable.

The complete SEAT / VAG OEM number, electronics manufacturer reference, ECU family and relevant vehicle information should therefore be compared before ordering.

SEAT VAG ECU numbers – 03G, 03L, 038, 045, 03C and 03F

Why does a SEAT ECU have both a VAG number and a Bosch or Siemens number?

The product combines Bosch reference 0281017154, VAG number 03L906018FJ and the EDC17C46 engine-management family.

The current product is available in Locked / Ready for programming variants. The available preparation should be selected according to the specific vehicle and intended programming procedure.

SEAT 03L906018NE / Bosch 0281017954

Another module from the 03L number family is the SEAT ECU 03L906018NE / Bosch 0281017954.

Although this reference begins similarly to 03L906018FJ, the final letters and Bosch number are different. The complete VAG reference should therefore always be retained.

SEAT EDC17C46 – 0281017942 / 03L906018KT

A current EDC16 diesel example is the SEAT 2.0 TDI ECU Bosch 0281013283 / 03G906021LP / EDC16U34.

The EDC16U34 designation identifies the general control-unit family, while 0281013283 and 03G906021LP identify the specific module more precisely.

SEAT Altea 2.0 TDI BKD – 0281012278 / 03G906016HM

For SEAT Altea 2.0 TDI with the BKD engine designation, the current catalogue includes the SEAT Altea ECU Bosch 0281012278 / 03G906016HM / EDC16U1.

The engine code BKD is useful additional information, but the final selection should still be based primarily on the complete ECU references.

SEAT Altea 1.9 TDI – 03G906016DG / Bosch 0281011885

Another Altea diesel module is the SEAT Altea 1.9 TDI ECU 03G906016DG / Bosch 0281011885.

This differs from the 2.0 TDI BKD control unit above despite both being used in Altea applications. Vehicle model alone is therefore not enough to identify the correct ECU.

SEAT Alhambra / VW Sharan – 03G906016JP / 0281012696

This module combines the VAG number 03C906027AD, Bosch reference 0261S04707 and the MED17.5.5 family designation.

The current product offers locked and ready-for-programming variants. MED17.5.5 alone should not be used to confirm compatibility because other VAG vehicles also use different ECUs from the same family.

SEAT Leon 1.2 TSI – 03F906070CG / 5WP44748

This module uses VAG number 03F906070CG together with electronics reference 5WP44748. It demonstrates that not every SEAT petrol ECU follows Bosch 0261S... numbering.

SEAT is part of the Volkswagen Group and shares engines, platforms and electronic systems with Volkswagen, Audi and Škoda. As a result, some ECU numbers can appear in applications involving more than one VAG brand.

VIRGIN SEAT ECU

For selected SEAT control units, an ECU may be reset or otherwise prepared for subsequent adaptation to another vehicle. This type of preparation can be described as VIRGIN.

The exact meaning and installation procedure depend on the ECU family and vehicle generation. A VIRGIN ECU should not automatically be considered Plug & Play unless the specific product description states this.

SEAT immobiliser and ECU replacement

In many SEAT vehicles, engine-start authorisation involves security data shared between the engine ECU and other vehicle electronics. A standard used ECU can retain immobiliser-related information from its previous vehicle.

Depending on the model, ECU family and preparation method, adaptation, programming, synchronisation or transfer of vehicle-specific data may therefore be required.

SEAT ECU cloning

An ECU-family designation identifies the general engine-management architecture but not the exact control unit.

For example, the current SEAT catalogue contains several different EDC16U34 modules and more than one EDC17C46 reference. Likewise, MED17.5 and MED17.5.5 are families containing different VAG and Bosch part numbers.

The preferred identification sequence is therefore:

  • complete SEAT / VAG OEM part number,
  • Bosch, Siemens, Continental, Magneti Marelli or other manufacturer number,
  • ECU-family designation,
  • vehicle model and generation,
  • engine capacity and engine code where known,
  • hardware and software identification where required.

Common symptoms that may indicate a SEAT ECU problem

A defective engine control unit can produce different symptoms, but similar problems may also be caused by sensors, wiring, actuators, fuel-system components, power-supply faults or vehicle-network problems.

  • engine does not start,
  • no diagnostic communication with the ECU,
  • engine stalls or is difficult to restart,
  • limp mode or reduced engine power,
  • injector or ignition-control faults,
  • incorrect throttle response,
  • fuel-pressure or turbocharger-control faults,
  • CAN communication errors,
  • fault codes that repeatedly return,
  • internal ECU memory or electronic faults.

Before replacing the ECU, check battery voltage, ECU power supply, ground connections, fuses, relays, connectors and wiring. A diagnostic trouble code alone does not prove that the engine control unit itself is defective.
