A complete ATE ABS assembly may carry several different part numbers. One number can identify the hydraulic section, another the electronic ABS controller, while an additional OE reference identifies the application used by the vehicle manufacturer.

ATE MK60 – A Well-Known ABS System

One of the best-known ATE ABS system families is MK60. A complete HECU combines the hydraulic section with the electronic ABS control unit. Depending on the specific version, the assembly may include a valve block, ABS pump motor and electronic controller responsible for ABS and vehicle stability functions.

MK60-family systems can be found in selected Audi, Volkswagen, Seat, Skoda, BMW, Ford, Mazda, Volvo and other vehicles. However, the MK60 designation alone does not mean that all units are interchangeable.

Correct identification still requires the complete ATE reference together with the vehicle manufacturer's OE number.

ATE or Bosch – Which ABS System Is Fitted to the Vehicle?

Depending on the model, production year, equipment level and braking-system configuration, the same vehicle range may use ABS systems supplied by different manufacturers, including ATE and Bosch.

An ATE ABS pump should not be assumed to be interchangeable with a Bosch unit simply because both were fitted to the same vehicle model or have a similar appearance. They belong to different system families, so the numbers printed on the original unit remain the primary method of identification.

ATE Hydraulic Pump vs ABS Control Module – What Is the Difference?

A complete ABS assembly can consist of several components working together:

• hydraulic block containing internal channels and solenoid valves,
• ABS pump motor,
• electronic ABS / ESP control unit,
• sensors and measuring components depending on the design of the particular system.

This is why several different ATE references may appear on one ABS assembly. The hydraulic-unit number does not necessarily match the reference used for the electronic ABS controller.

Common Symptoms of a Faulty ATE ABS Pump

A fault in the hydraulic pump or electronic ABS controller can cause a variety of symptoms. Depending on the vehicle, these may include:

• ABS warning light illuminated,
• ABS and ESP warning lights illuminated together,
• stability-control system fault message,
• no diagnostic communication with the ABS control unit,
• hydraulic pump motor fault codes,
• ABS solenoid valve fault codes,
• brake pressure sensor faults,
• internal ABS / ESP control module faults,
• CAN communication errors,
• ABS, ESP or traction-control functions disabled,

An illuminated ABS warning light does not automatically mean that the ABS pump itself is defective. Similar symptoms can also be caused by wheel-speed sensors, ABS reluctor rings, damaged wiring, poor power supply or ground connections, or CAN communication problems.

Does a Used ATE ABS Pump Require Coding?

This depends on the vehicle and the generation of the ABS system. In some vehicles, a replacement unit with matching part numbers may mainly require correct installation and bleeding of the brake system. In other applications, coding, configuration or adaptation of the ABS controller may also be necessary.

This is particularly relevant to systems where the ABS controller stores information relating to vehicle equipment, drivetrain type, ESP configuration or other vehicle-specific parameters.

For this reason, check both the part numbers and the installation requirements for the specific ABS unit before ordering.

2. Check the ATE hydraulic-unit reference.
3. Check the ATE electronic ABS control module reference.
4. Compare all suffix letters and additional digits.

6. Do not select a part only by vehicle model or housing appearance.
7. Check whether coding or adaptation will be required after installation.

Two units with almost identical housings may contain different hydraulics, electronics or software. With ABS systems, the complete part numbers are much more important than the external appearance of the unit.
